Debt settlement occurs when you "settle" your debts with your creditors. This
option is available those borrowers with very large amounts of
credit card
debts, who have fallen very far behind on their payments. Of course, debt
settlement is not always your only or best option. Some related forms of debt
relief are featured on other directory pages of the Debt Consolidation Loan

The settling of a consumer's debt involves negotiation with your creditors to cancel a portion
of what you currently owe. Here's an example: if you owe $10,000, you've lost your job and
you can no longer make your minimum monthly payments, then you may call your creditors
and say you are unable to repay what you owe. Some companies may agree to erase
(or eliminate) a portion of your debt and will usually set up a repayment plan.
You, then, promise to repay a set percentage of the reduced amount - maybe
$8,000 in this example – paying a portion of the new total debt every month
until the negotiated balance is paid
off.
You can settle your debts on your own, but consumers are usually
more successful when they work with a debt settlement firm, many times saving 40
percent or more of your debt. These companies exist solely to negotiate with
creditors on behalf of their clients. They are usually more successful at
settling bills than individuals because they have spent years developing relationships with the
major credit lending agencies, and they can leverage more debt from multiple
clients.
