Living Will Definition

A living will is a legal document specifying which, if any, heroic or life-sustaining measures one does or does not want to be attempted in the case of terminal illness or mental incapacitation. For example, if an individual is involved in a bad car accident and sustains major brain damage resulting in a persistent vegetative state their living will might stipulate that no mechanical means should be utilized to prolong life by e.g., providing mechanical ventilation or forced feeding.
