Rain Check Definition

A "rain check" is a promise-often informal-to honor in the future a current sale price for an item that is out of stock. For example, you might visit a grocery store with an advertisement only to discover the advertised item has been sold out; the manager might tell you "I’ll give you a rain check on that-come see me next week and I’ll have more of those in stock." The term originated in baseball, where ticket holders for a rainout would be issued a check allowing attendance at some future game.
